Crew Member Discloses Depression Following Wave of Backlash After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also included well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the period after the flight.

She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and years of training to the personal milestone of her roots – was buried under the tide of misogyny.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had resulted from the experience, such as spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated spacecraft launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that crossed the edge of space.

The diverse crew also included leaders in different industries.
